The Pilot Shortage: Lawmakers To The ‘Rescue’?
Many aviation professionals and enthusiasts are not surprised by the news that Lawmakers are looking to intervene to “help” alleviate the pilot shortage. Equally, many are not thrilled at the prospect of the government getting involved. For many, the current pilot shortage is largely caused by government intervention and would prefer the government not to get involved and let the industry solve the problem on its own – as it’s capable of doing. Furthermore, it’s believed that government intervention will inadvertently make the problem worse in the long run.
Lawmakers draft legislation that would raise the pilot retirement age
Legislation sponsored by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) would raise the mandatory retirement age for commercial airline pilots from 65 to 67. The Let Experienced Pilots Fly Act, which Graham and Roy plan to introduce in the coming days, will be aimed at alleviating the pilot shortage that is currently stifling U.S. airline growth and has taken its largest toll on regional air service.

WASHINGTON, July 25 (Reuters) – A group of Republicans in Congress on Monday proposed legislation to raise the mandatory commercial pilot retirement age to 67 from 65, in a bid to address an airline industry staff shortage. The proposal, which would require pilots over age 65 to pass a rigorous medical screening every six months, follows complaints of pilot shortages by many regional airlines.

As the country’s pilot shortage fuels flight cuts, Sen. Lindsey Graham is introducing legislation that would raise the mandatory retirement age for commercial airline pilots to 67 from 65. The “Let Experienced Pilots Fly Act” would also require pilots over the age of 65 to maintain a first-class medical certification that needs to be renewed every six months.
